Lindsey Blair and Bobby Gilles recap and discuss Pastor Travis McGowen's sermon from 1 John 4:13-16.
Bobby: Welcome to the Midweek Checkup. My name is Bobby Gilles, and I’m joined ONE MORE TIME THIS SEASON by Lindsey Blair. This past Sunday Pastor Travis preached First John Four. He said our triune God is worthy of our trust because of his past actions, his present gift, and his motives.
But I said “one more time” because the Midweek Checkup is taking the summer off. We are not, but this podcast and web series is.
Lindsey: That’s right, we’ll still be working but taking a short break from the Midweek Checkup. We love recapping the sermon with you all each week; it’s so helpful for us to have the recap, and we hope that it’s just as helpful for those of you who tune in and watch or listen each week. We’ll miss this time and all of you, but we’ll be back in August!
Now, for anyone who missed this past Sunday’s service, let’s do a quick recap.
Bobby: Pastor Travis began by saying that we can trust our triune God because of his past actions. The apostle John wrote, “… we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world.” God the Father is a promise-keeping God. What he said he would do is what he did. The Father sent the Son. Not only this, but God the Son implemented the plan of God the Father to save us.
Lindsey: Travis said there are three basic ways we know things. You can know something by getting off of your couch and observing it. And you can know something by staying on your couch and figuring out the problem in your own head. But whether you are on your couch or off your couch, you will only know that there is one God who exists in three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit through the third way of knowing, and that is through revelation. By what God says about himself in the Bible.
Bobby: Not only this, but God is acting in the present. We know we live in him, and he in us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truth. And the Holy Spirit also dwells in the hearts of Christians so that they are changed to love other people, particularly other Christians. We believe that the Father sent the Son to be the Savior of the world by the power of the Holy Spirit. We are drawn to the teachings of Scripture by the Holy Spirit. And we love others in spite of their failures and ours by the Holy Spirit.
Lindsey: Finally, our triune God is worthy of our trust because of his motives. The reason why the Father plans, the Son saves, and the Holy Spirit lives in the heart of Christians is because God loves his people. And because of this, as John says, we rely on this love to draw us to the Lord. To keep us in his family. And eventually, to carry us all the way home into the presence of God.
Bobby: This Sunday we’ll begin a brand new series called “The One That Changed Me.” Each week, we’ll hear from a different preacher in the Sojourn Collective or our church planting network, teaching from a passage of Scripture that has changed their life. Join us, and bring a friend.
