Lindsey Blair and Bobby Gilles recap and discuss this past Sunday's sermon from Hebrews 1:10-14.
Lindsey: Welcome to the Midweek Checkup. My name is Lindsey Blair and I’m joined by Bobby Gilles. This past Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage continued our series Matchless” The Wonder Of God’s Word.
Bobby: Pastor Jonah taught from Hebrews One, verses Ten through Fourteen. He said that the Supreme Son transforms our pain into praise.
And for anyone who missed the sermon or needs help remembering, let’s do the weekly recap:
Lindsey: Pastor Jonah began by noting that verse ten is a quote from Psalm 102. The preacher is acknowledging the emotional reality of his people.
The Bible never sugarcoats life. But the Preacher knows that suffering is an appropriate place to visit and a terrible place to live so he flips the heart of the Psalm on its head…because that’s what God does with our suffering.
When he quotes Psalm One-Oh-Two, he does not focus on the suffering in the song. He focuses on the majesty
Bobby: Did you notice God refers to Jesus as LORD, and CREATOR? The comparison is being set up. Jesus the creator God is compared to earth and heaven which will pass away. This means your SUFFERING is TEMPORARY. Then the song ends in the same way it begins, a rhetorical question. Which angel has God ever said this to? Quoting Psalm One-Ten, the Preacher keeps singing, “Sit in the place of honor at my right hand until I humble your enemies, making them a footstool under your feet."
Lindsey: The Eternal, Supreme Son of God came and conquered death, victoriously defeating his enemies, not with a sword. God turns mourning into dancing. He takes sad songs and turns them into declarations of majesty. He takes what’s ugly and makes it beautiful.
Bobby: God takes the cross, something horrific, a sign of torture and execution and shame, and turns it into a sign of liberation and salvation. The cross is the perfect symbol of our faith, because it’s what God does. The Supreme Son transforms our pain into praise.
Lindsey: Preachers preach, singers sing, and all together, as long as it’s still today, we encourage one another to hold on. We point continually to the one who is greater than the angels, whose name is above all names, who is the Supreme Eternal son. Your pain and your circumstances are temporary, but he is eternal, and he will transform your pain into praise.
Bobby: This coming Sunday we’ll continue our series called Matchless: The Wonder Of God’s Word. We’ll enter chapter two of Hebrews. And in Bible Fellowship we’ll discuss Psalm One-eleven together. Join us, and bring a friend.
