Lindsey Blair and Bobby Gilles recap and discuss Pastor Jonah Sage's sermon from Hebrews 6:13-20.
Bobby: Welcome to the Midweek Checkup. My name Bobby Gilles and I’m here with Lindsey Blair. This past Sunday, Pastor Jonah Sage preached Hebrews six, verses thirteen through twenty as he finished our series called Soul Anchor.
Lindsey: Pastor Jonah taught that there is no pain so great that his grace cannot comfort, and there is no death so tragic that his resurrection cannot overcome. If you missed the sermon or need help remembering, that’s why we’re here. It’s time for a Midweek Checkup.
Bobby: Jonah began by saying that, since we now have a general understanding of infancy and maturity, we need to talk about the transition. We looked at God’s promise to Abraham, and how Abraham had to wait patiently after Sarah died. Abraham is far from home, with the one child born from Sarah, and his brother has twelve children, yet Abraham is the one whom God promised to give descendants beyond number.
Lindsey: We receive promises and a vision of our life from the word of God but this is often followed by a period of waiting. This is where disappointment often sets in. Times of doubt, fear, loneliness, frustration…these are NORMAL parts of faith, and are often the early indications that you’re ready for more. Maturity is coming, so expect it. This will help you embrace the hard times and quiet some of the fear. Beyond that, Pastor Jonah offered two encouragements to navigate the in-between well.
Bobby: First, trade your striving for trusting. Like Abraham, it will be hard to wait. There will be losses and confusion. But if we want to get through that well, we must press on to trusting. We pray, “I don’t know what you’re doing, but you promised me this, and I trust you to keep your promises.” Second, we look to God instead of answers. Pray to experience God’s presence and read the scriptures to recognize God’s voice.
Lindsey: When milk is what you need, the answers are so empowering, clarifying, and healing. As your problems get more complicated, or as you see your wounds go far deeper than you realized, answers become insufficient. You need love, an embrace, a relationship. And we have that in our home, the kingdom of God. We can go there even though we are not blameless and pure, because Jesus went there for us and invited us in. We enter at his invitation and rest on his promises.
Bobby: All of life’s joys are for us but a taste of the pleasures waiting for us at God’s right hand forever, and all of life’s sorrows are for us a reminder of our Great High Priest who understands our weaknesses because he lived and suffered amongst us. Look for God, the anchor of your soul. Learn to view all of life as bread crumbs leading you to his presence.
Lindsey: This coming Sunday, we’ll begin a new series called Divine Desire, where we’ll journey through the seventh through the tenth chapters of Hebrews. And in Sunday Bible Fellowship, we’ll find out why Paul told the Corinthian church they were not ready for the solid food of the gospel, as we discuss 1 Corinthians three together. Join us and bring a friend.
