Episode Transcription

Bobby: Welcome to the Midweek Checkup. My name is Bobby Gilles and my cohost is Lindsey Blair. This past Sunday, Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Mark nine, verses two through twenty-eight in our Advent sermon series.

Lindsey: Jonah said that Jesus is God. Jesus is Savior. Jesus is King. Listen to him. But if you missed the sermon or need help remembering, you’re in the right spot for the Midweek Checkup.

Bobby: Jonah began by reminding us of the events of last week’s sermon, which Mark indicates happened six days before this passage. Six days ago, Jesus asked the disciples, "who do you say that I am?” Six days ago, Jesus and his disciples entered Caesarea Philippi, a dark place. Jews believed that the Canaanite god Baal lived on the top of this high mountain. On the sixth day of creation, the world awaited its glorious seventh-day rest of completion. For six days, Moses sat in a cloud waiting to hear from God in Exodus twenty-four. Six days anticipates a seventh.

Lindsey: And now Jesus takes the disciples up a mountain. When people go up a mountain in the Bible, they usually meet with God. Here, Jesus himself is transfigured; he is revealed in glory, with a transformed appearance and robes shinier than anything on earth could make them. And Moses and Elijah, who had climbed mountains to meet with God, now appear and talk with Jesus.

Bobby: These pillars of the OT, representing God's Law and Promises, come to Jesus. Jews believed that one like Moses would come to them again, as promised by Moses in Exodus 18:15. Jews believed that, at the time of God's great salvation, one like Elijah would come. And now, at the top of this mountain, Moses and Elijah come to Jesus. On the mount of Transfiguration, Jesus is revealed as the fulfiller of God's law. On the mount of Transfiguration, Jesus is revealed as the world's savior. And still the disciples do not understand.

Lindsey: Peter offers to build three tents, like monuments to recognize Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. If he understood the gravity of this moment and what was being revealed about Jesus, he would not have offered to build 3 tents; he would have fallen to his knees and suggested they build ONE THRONE, for King Jesus. Then God speaks and says, “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him."

Bobby: We have beautiful words of Jesus to listen to in the Scriptures, like “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Like, “"Anyone who is thirsty may come to me!” And even, “Come and have some breakfast.” Where do we find rest: Jesus. Where do we find true food: Jesus. Where do we find satisfying drink: Jesus. Where do we find peace with God and each other: Jesus. Victory over spiritual darkness and oppression: Jesus.

Lindsey: Amen. Well, this Sunday is Christmas Eve. We’ll have three services: 9 am, 11 am, and 11 pm. We’ll have a little children’s message at our morning services, both of which are family style - no childcare. Our 11 pm service will be our candlelight service, which ends when we hold candles and sing candlelight.
