Lindsey Blair and Bobby Gilles recap and discuss Pastor Jonah Sage's sermon from Hebrews 3:1-11.
Bobby: Welcome to the Midweek Checkup. My name is Bobby Gilles and I’m joined by Lindsey Blair. This past Sunday, Pastor Jonah Sage began our series “The Rest Of The Church.”
Lindsey: Pastor Jonah Sage preached from Hebrews Three, verses one through eleven. He taught that the Church is one holy, apostolic family. And for anyone who missed the sermon or needs help remembering, let’s do the weekly recap:
Bobby: Jonah began by saying that we, as a twelve-year old church, are in “church puberty” right now. And it’s time to discuss what it means to be the church; what we’re trying to become. And that is “one holy, apostolic family.” We are a family - this is one of the primary metaphors for the church in the New Testament. That implies a level of commitment under God our Father. We are partners with each other, brothers and sisters.
Lindsey: This isn’t a program; it’s a rhythm of life. But we can apply three principles. First, Show up. Sunday is our family day. Period. Let’s worship together, serve together, and talk about the Bible with other family members — either in Bible Fellowship or with our younger siblings in Sojourn Kids. Second, share the load. Healthy families work together. Third, Serve somebody. We serve each other to experience what it means to be family.
Bobby: What happens if we abandon unity for individualism? If you belong to God, you will live as God calls you to. If you belong to yourself, you will pursue what you think is right in your own eyes. You know who doesn’t listen to God? Everyone else! In this pursuit of individualism, we end up looking just like everyone around us.
Lindsey: Individualism leads us to abandon the call of holiness and we slide into worldly wandering. But we worship Jesus, preach Jesus, seek to follow Jesus, and enter into his rest. This is not nap-rest. This is a calm and quieted soul. Jesus came announcing he would make a way for us, he would be the way for us. We are now sent into the world as a unified, holy family announcing that Sunday dinner is open to anyone. There is a rest available, a peace of soul and mind, not because are striving are finished, but because the promise is fulfilled.
Bobby: We are one, holy, apostolic church birthed by Jesus, through Jesus, and for Jesus, and the rhythms of life in this family are birthed from joy and love. New values are hard to learn. It takes time…so we’ll walk with each other; we’re family. And we’ll make this our sojourn, our family, because we have been sent by Jesus.
Lindsey: This coming Sunday, we’ll continue The Rest Of The Church, looking at the “rest” of Hebrews chapter three. And in Bible Fellowship, we’ll talk about Second Thessalonians Three, verses six through thirteen together. Join us, and bring a friend.
