Episode Transcription

Bobby: Welcome to the Midweek Checkup. My name is Bobby Gilles, and my colleague is Lindsey Blair. This past Sunday, Pastor Jonah Sage preached Mark five, verses twenty-one through forty-three, in our series called Riddles of Redemption.

Lindsey: Pastor Jonah said that Jesus leaves the platform in pursuit of the person. If you’ve forgotten or missed the sermon, it’s time for the Midweek Checkup.

Bobby: Jonah told the story of a local synagogue rule named Jairus, who came to Jesus because his daughter was dying. Jonah asked, “What would you do if a man, coming from the same group that has been resisting and opposing you, the group that says you are demon-possessed and working for Satan, begs you for help...and on the other side you have throngs of adoring crowds running around lakes to be with you. Who would you choose? Perhaps surprisingly, Jesus leaves the platform in pursuit of the person.”

Lindsey: Then, as Jesus is going to help, a sick woman touches the fringe of his robe. Jesus is in the middle of a throng of people, but he notices this woman. He leaves the potential for applause and popularity and focuses on a desperate, suffering individual. But after healing her he learns that the daughter of Jairus has died. When Jesus tells the messengers she is only sleeping, they laugh at him.

Bobby: Jesus leaves the crowd and even only takes three disciples with him into the girl’s room. He holds her hand, and raises her from death. But he doesn’t market it as a big event. He tells the family not to spread the word, but to get the girl something to eat. In every story of Mark 5, Jesus leaves a crowd to pursue a person.

Lindsey: Jesus does not want the crowds, he wants you. So we can confidently cry out to him, or as Hebrews says we can BOLDLY approach the throne of grace, because we know Jesus isn't listening for the crowds, he's listening FOR YOU.

Bobby: Find in him all the love you'll ever need, see yourself as the object of Jesus' mission, because Jesus's mission is always personal. Trust him. Follow him. Live like him. Jesus leaves the platform in pursuit of the person.

Lindsey: Join us this Sunday for services at nine and eleven a.m. We hope to see you at Bible Fellowship, as well.
