Lindsey Blair and Bobby Gilles recap Pastor Jonah Sage's sermon from Hebrews 2:1-4.
Bobby: Welcome to the Midweek Checkup. My name is Bobby Gilles and I’m joined by Lindsey Blair. This past Sunday Pastor Jonah Sage continued our series “Matchless” The Wonder Of God’s Word.
Lindsey: Pastor Jonah taught from Hebrews Two, verses One through Four. He said that we can hold on by listening well. And for anyone who missed the sermon or needs help remembering, let’s do the weekly recap:
Bobby: Pastor Jonah began by talking about spiritual fatigue. We all feel it, and the congregation addressed by Hebrews certainly felt it. So the preacher says, “Listen carefully to the TRUTH, or we may drift away.” You can’t believe one way, and live another. What you believe directly shapes how you live. And if you don’t listen very carefully to what’s true, you may find yourself drifting down the road of fatigue-formed-failure.
Lindsey: We can be thankful God doesn’t change up his messages or promises. He’s always communicated consistently through his messenger. And every time his laws were broken, his people were punished. But it’s not that God sends a lightning bolt to punish us. When you disobeyed your parents as a child and touched the hot stove, you got burnt — not as punishment from your parents, but as a result of not listening to your parents. The consequences for sin are so often wrapped up in the sin themselves.
Bobby: So listen to the voice of history, that shows you over and over that no sin goes unpunished. But thankfully we have incredible motivation to listen well. The punishment for sin was laid upon Jesus as the culmination of his invitation to come to him and experience freedom. You’ve been invited home. You don’t have to fear God’s punishment. You don’t have to endure eternal consequences of sin…but you do need to Hold On and Listen Well!
Lindsey: And listen to the testimony of your sisters and brothers. Ask them to tell you stories of God providing for them, and caring for them. And finally, hold on and listen to the testimony of the Holy Spirit. What might shift if you could see the Bible as a beautiful history of God’s promise-keeping? What if you saw it as a collection of pure goodness meant to revive your soul and encourage your spirit?
Bobby: What might happen if we stopped seeing church as a product to consume but as a community to participate in? We study the scriptures and hear stories from our brothers and sisters about what God is up to. This will train your mind, your eyes, and your ears to recognize the presence of God.
Maybe you’ll start coming to Bible Fellowship and study the scriptures like most Christians throughout history have: together.
Lindsey: When you’re uncertain, you’ll go to the Scriptures and see how it fits. You’ll talk to your brothers and sisters and let them weigh in. And when this becomes our way of life, we will be a people who HOLD ON because we LISTEN WELL.
Bobby: This coming Sunday we’ll continue our series called Matchless: The Wonder Of God’s Word, looking at verses five through ten of Hebrews two. And in Bible Fellowship we’ll discuss Psalm One-twenty-one together. Are you ready for that?
Lindsey: I’m ready.
Bobby: Join us, and bring a friend.
